Yu-Gi-Oh! Archetype Overview: Gladiator BeastFitness Gear & Equipment
Co-Written By Gregory Tarleton-Markov and Arman Seth.
Gladiator Beast cards are an archetype consisting of futuristic Roman Colosseum warriors which revolve around attacking and then "Tagging Out" - sending themselves back to the deck to special summon another Gladiator Beast, whose effect(s) then activate. To "Tag Out" a Gladiator Beast, the card must have attacked or been attacked that turn - then, at the end of the Battle Phase, it is returned to the deck and another Gladiator Beast is selected and special summoned to the field. Gladiator Beast's rely on several Fusion monsters. Unlike typical Fusion Monsters Gladiator Beast Fusion monsters can "Contact Fuse," meaning that Polymerization is not required. Rather, there are certain prerequisites, such as having Gladiator Beast ______ and 2 other Gladiator Beast monsters on the field. In addition, these monsters used to Contact Fusion are sent back into the deck freeing up and reducing the Graveyard.
Gladiator Beast Bestiari - A standard card of any Gladiator Beast deck. When this card is special summoned to the field after "Tagging Out" another Gladiator Beast, you get to destroy one spell or trap on the field. Unfortunately, it is limited at 1. Use it wisely. If you run into a Bottomless Trap Hole, Dimensional Fissure or any sort of "Banish" card, the deck will run out of synch. Used primarily to Contact Fusion into Gladiator Beast Gyzarus.
Gladiator Beast Darius - Really important for this meta. There is a lot of backrow hate which can send multiple monsters to the Graveyard. This can be used to Special Summon ANY Gladiator Beast monster out of the Graveyard, even the Fusion monsters if they were properly summoned. Even if the summon of the Gladiator Beast is negated in any matter, Darius can bring them out which can lead to many explosive plays (instant XYZ summoning or "Contact Fusion"). Run 2.
Gladiator Beast Murmillo - A staple card for the deck. Allows you to destroy those monsters that the typical Gladiator Beast monsters can't run over. Run 1.
Gladiator Beast Retiari - Another staple card. Controls the opponent's Graveyard, which is especially important this format with all of the Master Hyperion and Lightsworn decks running around. Run 1.
Gladiator Beast Equeste - Useful for recycling any Gladiator Beast cards. Allows you to maintain hand power and have Gladiator Beast monsters every turn. Also allows you to place the Fusions back into the Extra Deck or re-use Gladiator Beast War Chariot. Run 2.
Gladiator Beast Hoplomus - A literal wall. Almost a guaranteed tag-out. Not many things can run over this 2100 defence monster. Run 1-2.
Gladiator Beast Laquari - The main beatstick of the deck. Can be used in combination with Forbidden Lance to get over 2500 ATK monsters or suicide 2600 ATK monsters. Really important first turn with a set Lance and/or War Chariot. Necessary to "Contact Fuse" into Gladiator Beast Heraklinos, the most powerful Gladiator Beast monster. Run 2.
Gladiator Beast Alexander - Typically not used. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Dimacari - Typically not used. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Andal - A 1900 beatstick, although it can't tag out. Essentially not run. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Lanista - The newest member. Has not seen much play, although it has a somewhat useful effect. However, it has to banish the Gladiator Beast card, which hurts the cards playability. Run 1 or 0.
Gladiator Beast Octavius - Typically not run. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Samnite - Typically not run. Gladiator's Proving Ground eliminated the major use of this card. Run 1 or 0.
Gladiator Beast Secutor - Useful in this meta. Typically run in more explosive decks. Has not seen much play before. Tricky to use, but with correct timing can be powerful. Run 1 or 0.
Gladiator Beast Spartacus - Not run. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Torax - Not run. Run 0.
Gladiator Beast Tygerius - Not run. Run 0.
Test Tiger - Useful for more explosive plays. Allows for an instant tag out allowing the use of another Gladiator Beast effect. Tribute this card in order to "Tag Out" a Gladiator Beast card. That Gladiator Beast card acts as if it was "Tagged Out" by another Gladiator Beast which activates it's effect. Another good thing is that it can be Special Summoned if you have a Gladiator Beast monster out on the field. Can instantly XYZ for a Rank 3 monster if needed while Murmillo or Retiari are on the field. Considered an "All or Nothing" card, run 3 or 0.
Test Ape - Basically an XX-Emmersblade for Gladiator Beasts. When it's destroyed by battle, you get to special summon a Level 4 or lower Gladiator Beast to the field.
Gladiator Beast Heraklinos - The most powerful Gladiator Beast card. To "Contact Fuse" it, you need Laquari and two other Gladiator Beast monsters on the field. Once it is summoned, you can discard one card from your hand to negate the activation a spell or trap - an effect which can be used multiple times per turn AND during your opponent's turn. To top it all off, Heraklinos is a 3000 ATK beatstick.
Gladiator Beast Essedarii - To "Contact Fuse" it, you need any two Gladiator Beast monsters on the field. It has no effect, but is a 2500 ATK beatstick.
Gladiator Beast Gyzarus - Another fairly powerful Gladiator Beast monster. To "Contact Fuse" it, you need Bestiari and one other Gladiator Beast monster. When summoned, you get to destroy up to two cards on the field. Like most Gladiator Beast monsters, Gyzarus shares the effect of "Tagging Out" - but in this case you get to special summon two Gladiator Beast monsters.
Gladiator Beast Gaiodiaz - Not typically run because Gladiator Beast Spartacus is not usually run. When this 2600 ATK beatstick destroys a monster, damage equal to the destroyed card's DEF is inflicted to the opponent. Like most Gladiator Beast monsters, Gaiodiaz shares the effect of "Tagging Out" - but in this case you get to special summon two Gladiator Beast monsters.
Gladiator Proving Ground - As a deck searcher, it is a very useful staple for any Gladiator Beast deck. By its effect, you get to add one Level 4 or lower Gladiator Beast monster from your deck to your hand.
Colosseuum - Cage of The Gladiator Beasts - Typically not run. Each time a monster is summoned, place one counter on this card. Gladiator Beast monsters gain 100 ATK and 100 DEF for each. If this card would be destroyed, you can discard another from your hand to prevent its destruction.
Gladiator Beast's Battle Archfiend Shield - Not typically used. When equipped to a Gladiator Beast monster, and that monster would be destroyed, this card is destroyed instead. When a Gladiator Beast monster "Tags Out" with this card equipped (and this card is sent to the Graveyard), this card is sent back to the hand.
Gladiator Beast's Battle Gladius - Not typically used. When equipped to a Gladiator Beast monster, it gains 300 ATK. When a Gladiator Beast monster "Tags Out" with this card equipped (and this card is sent to the Graveyard), this card is sent back to the hand.
Gladiator Beast's Battle Halberd - Not typically used. When equipped to a Gladiator Beast monster, and that monster attacks, you get to destroy one spell or trap at the end of the Damage Step. When a Gladiator Beast monster "Tags Out" with this card equipped (and this card is sent to the Graveyard), this card is sent back to the hand.
Gladiator Beast's Battle Manica - Not typically used. When equipped to a Gladiator Beast monster, that monster cannot be destroyed by battle. When a Gladiator Beast monster "Tags Out" with this card equipped (and this card is sent to the Graveyard), this card is sent back to the hand.
Gladiator Beast's Respite - A Moray Of Greed for Gladiator Beast decks. Return two Gladiator Beast cards from your hand to your deck to draw three cards.
Indomitable Gladiator Beast - When activated, target one face-up Gladiator Beast monster, which gains 500 ATK by this card's effect. While this card is in your graveyard, you get to return two Gladiator Beast monsters from the Graveyard to your deck to return this card to your hand.
Gladiator Beast War Chariot - A staple of any Gladiator Beast deck. While you control a face-up Gladiator Beast monster and an Effect Monster's effect is activated, you can negate its activation and destroy that card. Can be easily recycled via Equeste's effect.
Trojan Gladiator Beast - Not typically run. Special summon one Gladiator Beast to your opponent's field to draw one card.
