World's Largest Producers of Fruits

1.) Olive (Olea europaea) – Spain
The 2007 world’s production of Olives, which are the most extensively cultivated fruit crop in the world, is 17.73 million tons. Spain accounts for the largest production with 6.2 million tons followed by Italy and Greece with 3.4 and 2.4 million tons, respectively. The ten largest producers of Olives are located in the Mediterranean region producing 95% of the world’s Olives.
2.) Orange (Citrus x sinensis) – Brazil
Oranges are grown worldwide and the world’s largest producer is Brazil producing about 17 million tons annually. On the 2nd and 3rd spot are the United States and Mexico, respectively. This nutritious fruit originated in Southeast Asia.
3.) Grapes (Vitis) – Italy
Grapes which are the primary source of wine can be eaten raw and can be used in making jam, jelly, juice, vinegar and others. The number one producer of this vitamin C and K rich fruit is Italy with an annual production of 8.5 million tons followed by China and the USA.
4.) Apple (Malus × domestica) – China
Perhaps, the most popular of all the fruits in the world is Apple. China is the largest producer and exporter of this fruit, which is associated with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, with 27.5 million tons every year. The US is the 2nd largest producer of Apple but Chile and Italy place 2nd and 3rd as the largest exporters, respectively. This widely cultivated tree fruit originated in Central Asia.
5.) Pear (Pyrus) – China
China also leads the production of Pear with 12.6 tons annual production. The US and Italy placed 2nd and 3rd largest producers, respectively. Pears which are rich in potassium and phosphorous are consumed fresh and canned as juice and dried.
6.) Mandarin Orange (Citrus reticulata) – China
China again tops the production of Mandarin Orange with 15.1 tons annual production followed by Spain and Brazil. This fruit is also known as Mandarin. It is usually eaten plain or in fruit salads.
7.) Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) – Turkey
The leading producer of Apricot is Turkey followed by Iran and Italy. This beta carotene and vitamin C rich fruit had been known in Armenia since Ancient Time. They are widely grown in Ararat Valley.
8.) Cherry (Prunus) – Turkey
The world’s largest producer of Cherry is also the largest producer of Apricots – Turkey followed by the US and Iran. Majority of the world’s Cherry comes from Europe, about 40%. Cherry contains considerable amount of carbohydrates and vitamin C.
9.) Blueberry (Cyanococcus) – USA
The US is the largest producer of Blueberries in the world. Canada is the top exporter of Blueberries in 2007 with a total amount of $323 million. Most of the harvest came from British Columbia. Chile is the largest producer of this vitamin K rich in South America and the largest exporter in Southern Hemisphere.
10.) Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera) – Egypt
Date Palm, which is extensively cultivated for its edible sweet fruit, has been cultivated throughout history. It originated in Africa and Asia. The largest producer of this sugar-rich fruit is Egypt with an estimated annual production of 1.3 million tons. The 2nd and 3rd largest producers are Iran and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
11.) Fig (Ficus carica) – Turkey
Aside from being the largest producer of Apricot and Cherry, Turkey is also the leading producer of Fig with an estimated annual production of 285,000 tons followed by Egypt with 170,000 tons. Figs are grown for its edible fruits which are rich in magnesium and potassium.
12.) Coconut (Cocos nucifera) – Indonesia
In the Philippines, the Coconut tree is considered the “tree of life” because of its usefulness. The largest producer of coconut in the world is Indonesia with an estimated annual production of 19.5 million tons followed by the Philippines with 15.3 million tons and India with 10.8 million tons. This plant is grown in more than 80 countries worldwide with a total production of 61 million tons.
