While answering this question for myself, it dawned on me that others are searching for the same answers as I am. Part of me wonders how there could be such high rates of unemployment when there are so many jobs available everywhere, while the other part of me wonders if it's time to change the way we "work".
In doing my own diligence, I happened to come across a list of experts and obsessives who have all shaped my understanding of why unemployment is so high this year.
- A professor at the Haas School of Business in Berkley, Laura D’Andrea Tyson decidely stated that she believes the steady rate of unemployment is due to fiscal fears mixed in with the aftereffects of hurricane Sandy. She believes that while there is definitely an increase in the skills employers are looking for, that there really isn't a skills "gap" as other experts suggest. Instead, Laura believes the challenge is due to a lack of ability to obtain education. Interestingly enough, she doesn't believe it's a lack of college education necessarily, but rather that it's education for educations sake, so that people who have been unemployed for more than 3 months, don't become obsolete in the real world job markets because of illegitaimate perspectives from hiring managers.
- Peter Morici with Fox News feels that more than enough jobs have opened up or been created (more than 115,000(, and he feels unemployment rates are still so high because people are simply not seeking work. Peter feels this is happening because so many people have been out of work for so long and rejected so many times, that they've become too "discouraged" to look for work anymore.
- Lady Justice on Yahoo!Answers has some interesting takes that I couldn't ignore. Like Peter from fox, she believes that part of the high rates of jobless individuals, is because people have become severely discouraged. Though she goes on to suggest that people who have spent most of their lives developing strong resumes, do not want to look like "job hoppers". Lady Justice also makes a good point that many of the 12 million unemployed have a lack of experience with modern job search and application skills.
- While Robert Moritz doesn't have any specific causes to cite, he brings up the highly relevant fact that hiring is just as difficult for businesses as it is for job seekers. He isn't sure why this is such a problem but suggests it has to do with the infamous skills gap.
Over the vast numbers of articles and publications I've researched, it's clear that there are more than 12 million people out of work, and those are only the people who are still eligible for unemployment, meaning there are millions more who are out of work and not getting even the assistance of unemployment.
And while some may be satisfied with the above information, I personally am still on the case hunting for clues. I believe there is more at work in places we cannot see, though what specifically is happening, I have not found out yet.
