Ways to Treat a Cold
Winter can be an awful month for many people who regularly suffer severe illnesses due to several viruses that cause symptoms like sneezing, coughing, runny nose, headache and high temperature. Colds usually occur during lengthy periods of cold weather but fortunately, you can get rid of the cold quickly by taking care of your body as soon as you detect the symptoms. One way of getting rid of colds quickly is to act on the very early symptoms that occur. It can help you prevent the cold from severing.
The Healing Process of Colds
Did you know that some of the symptoms of colds are just part of the natural healing process of the body? Symptoms such as high temperature help kill viruses by circulating germ-killing proteins in the blood faster. This results in an earlier recovery from colds.
Another regular symptom we all know of is coughing. Coughing helps clear thick mucus from the breathing passages that can carry germs to your lungs and the whole body.
1) Blow your nose
Rather than sniffing the mucus back into the body, blow your nose regularly into a tissue. Too much mucus inside the nose can eventually dry up overnight and cause heavy blockage. The pressure of blowing your nose too hard can cause earache because of phlegm being moved into the ear passages. For a more appropriate way of blowing your nose, block a nostril with a finger and gently blow to clear the other. This way, you can get rid of more mucus because air only pushes through one nostril. Once you have finished blowing through the first nostril, continue to clear out the next.
2) Squirt warm salt water
Warm salty water helps break away nasal congestion and particles of bacteria. Pour a pint of warm steamy water with a mixture of salt. Allow the water to be steamy for effective results and then breathe in the hot steam or squirt the salt water into the nose using a bulb syringe or anything similar and watch your nasal passages unblock.
Other methods of clearing nasal passages include:
• Drink lots of water
• Take a warm steamy shower
• Eat spicy foods like curries, peppers and chillies
3) Rest for the whole day
Resting can help relieve colds very quickly. During the time when you have a cold, your immune system works hard battling with the invaders. All the natural symptoms like coughing and sneezing are all signs that your immune system is trying to kill and get rid of them. However, going to work and doing exercise will affect the way your body fights with the viruses and result in a slower recovery. Resting throughout the day and night can help your body focus on the immune system for a faster recovery.
4) Drink hot liquids
Drinking hot liquids helps clear the nasal passages. Drinks such as tea, hot lemon water and honey are all perfect choices for the remedy. They also help soothe the swollen membranes that line the nose and throat.
Natural remedies are both cheap and effective ways to reduce and get rid of colds but for quick results, it is better to use these remedies as early as possible.
