Vasograin (Ergotamine) for treating migraine
Vasograin (Ergotamine) is an ergo-peptine and component of the ergot group of alkaloids; it is biochemically and structurally strongly associated to ergoline. It enjoys structural relationship to a number of neuro-transmitters, and has organic action as a vaso constrictor. Vasograin (Ergotamine) is administered clinically for treating acute migraine attacks (occasionally together with caffeine), and to stimulate child birth and avoid postpartum hemorrhage.
Ergotamine has distinct vasoconstrictor actions and biased agonistic properties at serotonin receptors. Vasograin imbibes restriction of cranial and secondary blood vessels and also has influential oxytocic effect on the uterus. It also decreases hyper perfusion in the basilar artery areas.
Vasograin (Ergotamine) is inadequately concentrated from the GI tract (oral, sublingual), reduced additionally by gastric stasis.
Penetrates via breast milk
widespread hepatic initial pass action.
Vasograin is discharged through bile, urine (4%); eradication T 1/2 (biphasic): 2 hour (preliminary stage), 21 hour (final stage).

These are not the complete list of Vasograin Side Effects, for detailed information consult a doctor.
Potentially Fatal: CV disturbances and acute secondary vasoconstriction. As a result of vascular occlusions resulting in bowel necrosis, MI, gangrene and renal failure. Concurrent use of oral contraceptives or beta-blockers amplifies the danger.
• Patients suffering from Anemia;
• Observe for symptoms of ergotism such as lack of feeling or itchy edges.
Other Drug Interactions
Vasoconstrictor actions improved by sympathomimetic properties e.g. adrenaline. Caffeine boos the effect of ergotamine.
Potentially Fatal: Use within six hour of taking serotonin agonist may cause amplified and protracted vaso pastic actions. May also have augmented danger of secondary vasoconstriction with beta blockers. Erythromycin augments plasma concentration of ergotamine which result in ergotism.
Vasograin may be used before or after food for treating migraine.
