Many beef dishes are popular all over the world except in areas where Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism are the dominant religions because to Hindus and Jains and some Buddhist, eating beef is a taboo. Here are the most famous and deliciously good beef dishes from the different parts of the world.

1.) Nihari: Pakistan

Nihari is a beef dish that is extremely popular in Pakistan. It is actually the national dish of Pakistan. This beef dish is also popular among Muslims in India. I am pretty sure Obama Bin Laden might have enjoyed this often that he had forgotten to tighten the security in his hide out.

Nihari is a curry made from beef shank and spices and is usually eaten in the morning after overnight cooking.

2.) Sauerbraten: Germany

Sauerbraten is a popular beef dish from Germany. This German pot roast is made of bottom round or rump beef marinated up to 10 days before cooking in a mixture of vinegar, water, seasonings and spices and served with potato dumplings, boiled potato, red cabbage or noodles. Sauerbraten has been described as one Germany’s national dishes.

Another popular Filipino beef dish is the Kare-kare. This dish is a Philippine stew made from peanut sauce with different vegetables, stewed oxtail, beef and tripe. It is served and eaten with sautéed shrimp paste or alamang spiced with chili. Common vegetables for Kare-kare include eggplant, pechay and banana blossom.

Pinapaitan or Philippine Beef Stew is an Ilocano delicacy and a popular beef dish from the Philippines. This Filipino beef stew is consists of beef innards cut into pieces and flavored with onion, ginger, green chili pepper and salt or fish sauce locally known as patis.

5.) Mechado: Philippines

Mechado is a deliciously good beef dish from the Philippines. This Filipino dish is prepared by marinating larded pieces of beef in vinegar, soy sauce, calamansi or lemon juice, black pepper, garlic and bay leaf and then browned quickly in hot oil and then slowly braised in its marinade with the addition of soup stock, tomato sauce and onion until tender and the liquid is reduced to a thick flavorful gravy. Potatoes, carrots and red/green bell peppers are added in Mechado.

Beef Curry is a very popular beef dish in South Asia and other parts of Asia particularly in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, Beef Curry is served with roasted onions.

7.) Beef Stroganoff: Russia

Beef Stroganoff or Beef Stroganov is a beef dish that originated in Russia. This Russian dish of sautéed pieces of beef is served in a sauce with smetana or sour cream. This Russian dish is also popular in Europe, North America, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Portugal, Lebanon and Iran.

8.) Vietnamese Beef Stew: Vietnam

Vietnamese Beef Stew is locally called Kho in Vietnam. This dish is made from chunks of beef which is braised in a thick, mildly sweet reddish-brown-colored sauce containing caramelized sugar and fish sauce. It is usually simmered, like a stew, in a clay pot and typically served with steamed white rice.

The Japanese Beef Stew is called Nikujaga and it means meat-potato. This Japanese dish of beef, onion and potatoes is stewed in sweetened soy sauce and vegetables. Thinly sliced beef is boiled until most of the liquid is evaporated. Nikujaga is considered comfort food and many Japanese people claim they crave for it if they do not eat it for a long period of time.

Hayashi Rice usually contains beef, button mushrooms and onions in a thick demi-glace sauce that contains tomato sauce and red wine and served on top of rice.

11.) Beef Bourguignon: France

Beef Bourguignon, which is also called Beef Burgundy, is a popular beef dish that originated from France. This traditional French recipe is a stew prepared with beef braised in red burgundy and beef broth and flavored with onion, garlic and a bouquet gami with mushrooms and pearl onions. It is also known as Boeuf à la Bourguignonne.
