Food processors are an ingenious appliance to have in the kitchen. Its main purpose is making meal preparation much easier and faster for the cook or chef.

The food processor is equipped with several settings to knead, shred, grind, chop, slice, mix, blend, shave and pulverize numerous types of foods.

On the other hand blenders, hand mixers, mini choppers, stick mixers and stand mix as well as various types of knives have been doing the job for years. Some of these applications require some sort of liquid to get the job done. Others are manipulated by sheer muscle and dedication of the preparer. All of these items are great alternatives to the food processor with the exception of simplicity and time management. It takes much longer to get the job done using a knife or blender than it does a food processor.

The food processor was invented by a French catering company salesman in 1960. Pierre Verdon named his invention the Robot-Coupe. By 1971 this machine was renamed the Le Magi-Max. In 1973 Pierre Verdon met an American inventor; Carl Sonthemier who refined the construction, design and look of Pierre’s original food processor. The improvements were astonishing and they agreed to create a new name for this appliance that would prepare food in a fraction of the time manual preparation would take. This new food processor debuted in 1973 and was finally named the Cuisinart.

Today there are many different variations of this particular appliance on the market. Some are of a simple design where a single bowl with a flat blade spins to do the cutting, chopping and slicing. Most models come with a variety of attachments. Each attachment helps process different food types. Others have a tube at the top with a safety shield for longer and firmer vegetables. It allows the preparer to aid the food down into the chamber where the blades spin to do the work in seconds.

Smoothies are prepared in food processors now for a quicker way to shave ice cubes into a slush combined with fruit and milk or yogurts so that this beverage comes out with a smooth and creamy texture. Many cakes and breads made from bananas and zucchini are prepared in little or no time when a food processor is used in the pre-baking process. These fruits and vegetables can be sliced, diced, chopped, crushed and liquefied in just moments. The time saved prevents fruits and vegetables from too much air exposure which would cause them to turn brown before mixed into casseroles, cakes, pies, tarts or main course entrees.

Many manufacturers and companies have developed their own style of food processors for consumers to purchase. Each one is slightly different from the next. Therefore, allowing their customers a choice depending upon their cooking needs. Some are large, heavy, and created for professional chefs and restaurants. Others are made of lighter materials for ease in lifting, maneuvering, and cleaning. Whichever appliance one chooses the bottom line is it will save time preparing foods, desserts, and beverages. The time saved will get you out of the kitchen sooner and can also be used to start preparing the next item on the menu; or give parents more time to share with their families.
