Baking soda has several household uses and it is also good on rust. Mix it with water to make a nice paste and apply it to the surface. Let it dry and remove it with a wire brush. Repeat several times if necessary.

A slice of potato works quite well on kitchen items such as knives and pans. Add a little salt to the potato slice and rub it on the rusted spot. Potatoes contain oxalic acid which helps to dissolve rust deposits.

Lemons are great for tea and other beverages but it can also be used to dissolve rust. Lightly sprinkle salt on the rust spot and then add lemon juice to it. Wipe it off after a few seconds and the rust will wipe away. Mixing lemon juice with vinegar will also create an effective solution to dissolve rust.

It has been said over the years that rust will remove corrosion on car batteries and even dissolve rust. Coke has a large amount of phosphoric acid which is an important ingredient in most rust removal products. Pouring it over rusted nuts and bolts will help loosen them up and make them usable again.

If the area of rust is large and deeply corroded then a store bought remedy may be your best solution to tackle big jobs. After you have removed the rust from any surface, the most important thing is to keep it away from moisture. Dampness is the worst enemy for metal objects and is a breeding ground for future bouts of rust. If you follow these tips, your problems with rust can be eliminated a lot quicker.
