His idea for basketball game from a childhood game he played in Almonte, Ontario called duck-on-a-rock. Dr. Naismith was looking for a game that could be played indoors during those cold winter months.
In 1898, he became the physical education teacher at the University of Kansas, where he devised 13 new rules for the game. During the winter and spring, basketball is very popular in the United States, both college and pro basketball.
