One interview type that is continually been used by most firm is the telephone interview. Most firms use this kind of interview before calling for a second interview which could be a one-one, executive or panel interview. Since most firms use this kind of interview, if becomes important that job applicants know the proper ethics behind telephone interviewing.

In this article, we will examine the basic rules or rather the ethics behind telephone interviews and how the applicant should go about it.

What Is A Telephone Interview?

The telephone interview is the interview type where the personnel depending calls up an applicant who must have submitted a CV with them or applied for a job offer. It involves a series of simple questions and discuss; that could be shallow or detailed. A telephone interview could be scheduled or unscheduled. For a scheduled telephone interview, you already know that the company will be calling you so you are prepared but for an unscheduled phone interview, the call could be quite unexpected.

Telephone Ethics For Interviews

The way you talk during a phone interview is very important. Do not use a bedroom voice or musical voice or any unnatural tone while answering a phone interview. Since you already know you will be expecting a call from the firm at a given time, you should prepare for it as if you are attending a physical interview; and yes, it is an interview for sure. You could dress up as if for an interview, sit on a chair or seat that looks more like an interview chair or office chair. This will give you a kind of interview feel and you will most likely talk in a more professional manner.

Do not lie down to talk as the interviewer will most likely know that you are lying down since your voice will be blurry. The recruiting officer will most likely think you are not serious and count it against you.

Do not play any background music; whether soft or heard music. If you have a dog or cat, let them be taken care of and far from you at this point in time. Make sure that friends and family members are not around; you should tell them about the call you will be expecting.

Answer all the interviewers’ questions intelligently and don’t shout or breathe hard over the phone. Show composure and sociable skills while talking and remember to thank him for the time and interview at the end of the call. By the way, never end the call yourself even if you are sure that the interview is over. The recruiting officer should be the one to end the call since he is the one that called you.

For an unscheduled interview, things could be a little bit different since then you might not be fully prepared. Immediately you know that it is an interview, dash into a secluded location and get interviewed. If you are driving or on transit, do explain to the interviewer that you are driving or on transit and schedule a time to call you back.

In conclusion, telephone interviews are taken seriously by firms and are often used as screening methods. Make sure that the contact number included in the CV or resume is actually your and not that of a friend or fiancé. Also make sure you don’t give the family phone line as things may turn bad when your fiancé or friend or family member sounds impolite or less charming.
