Shooting Lesson: Learning to Fire with a 12 Bore DBBL Shot Gun
Most people love guns and the DBBL shot gun has a place of its own. It is an old weapon but is very good for hunting small game, duck and bird shooting.
I shall now discuss how to use and fire with a DBBL shotgun. The most easily available gun in India is the shotgun. One can go in for a local handmade shot gun or the Indian Ordinance shot gun. Both are double barrel weapons. Bear in mind that a shot gun is not self loading like a rifle; hence a double barrel is better. The IOF shot gun is available for about 50,000 rupees ($ 1000).
Before firing dismantle the gun. This is quite easy. You will notice a wooden piece at the bottom of the gun. Take a small spoon or your hand and give it a tug. It will slide off. A look at the gun will show a long knob or clip at the top of the butt also called ‘stock’. If you turn the clip to the right side the barrel will slide open and can be taken off. Thus the gun dismantles into 3 pieces.
Examine the gun and in particular the barrel and ensure it is clean and shining by holding it against the sun light. Once you are satisfied, re-assemble the gun. Fixing the barrel is the main part and will require some expertise. Hold the barrel in your left hand and with the right slide the top clip to the right till the gun barrel slips into position. Snap it shut with one swift movement.
You will now have to decide what ammunition to use. A shot gun does not use bullets but cartridges. These cartridges contain lead pellets which when fired spread out. Thus the range of a shot gun is limited compared to a rifle as further the target greater the spread and less lethal it gets.
Cartridges come in numbers from 1 to 12. This refers to the size of the pellets in the cartridge. For duck and bird shooting No4 cartridge is good. These cartridges are available easily in India and are manufactured by the Indian ordinance factory. A cartridge costs about Rs 100($2).
For shooting again slide the lever on the top of the gun and the barrel will slide down. Load both the barrels with the cartridge and snap the barrel back in position. On the small of the butt is a small knob called the safety catch slide it forward so that the trigger gets locked and the gun cannot be fired accidentally? Now you are ready to use your weapon.
You can go to a lake or a pond and use your weapon for game shooting. You only have to take a general aim as the pellets will spread out and hit the game. Hold the gun firmly against your shoulder and press the trigger in the general direction of your prey.
The shot gun is an excellent weapon for hunting small game and birds. After the shooting once again slide the lever to the right and the barrel will slide open? If the gun has an ejector the cartridges will spring out, otherwise use your fingers and pull out the cartridges. After the shoot dismantle your gun, clean and then store it.
