Author Ann Brashares introduces four teen girls Carmen, Tibby, Bridget, and Lena. They have been best friends since birth and have spent every summer together. This summer is different because it is their first summer apart. Lena will be spending the summer in Greece with her grandparents, Bridget is going to soccer camp, Carmen is going to spend the summer in South Carolina with her Dad, and Tibby will be stuck in Bethesda working a summer job and making a documentary.
Their lives change when they discover that a pair of thrift store jeans fit all them perfectly despite being different sizes and body types. The night before they depart on their summer adventures, they have a special ceremony. The plan is to send the pants to each other throughout the summer, write letters to each detailing their adventures; and they even make up a list of rules that should be followed as they wear the pants.
When Carmen arrives in South Carolina, she thinks that she is going to spend the summer hanging out with her dad. Instead, Carmen discovers that her father is going to get married at the end of the summer. In addition, he has a whole family that he has failed to tell her about.
As Lena spends time in Greece, she falls in love with Kostos. She has no idea how her relationship with him will change her life. When Bridget arrives at soccer camp, she develops a crush on one of the coaches. The problem is that Eric is older and unavailable. As Tibby spends her summer working a summer job at Walman’s, she makes two new friends Bailey and Brian. These two new friends changes her life in different ways.
