Odd-looking But Colorful and Beautiful Flowerhorns + Brief History
These marine creatures that are becoming popular aquarium pets worldwide are unique for their unusual appearance. These fish have protruding heads which look extremely bizarre. These creatures reminded me of some characters in the ‘Star Wars’ movies.
In addition, these creatures are notably remarkable for their unique colorations and markings.
1.) Kamfa
This fish called Kamfa looks like a hydrocephalus. It is a uniquely breed Flowerhorn that originated from Louhan, Indonesia. It is characterized by its white or yellow eyes, fan tail, water head and sunken eyes. This odd-looking fish is also notable for its head flowers.
2.) Golden Base
The brightly-colored and pretty-looking Golden Base is also called Fader. It was so- called because during juvenile stage its color will change completely into black and as the fading process occurs, the black "fades" away leaving a more vibrant and beautiful yellow or red color underneath.
3.) Indomalau
The brilliantly colored Indomalau is a beautiful and colorful Flowerhorn breed which is a combination of a female Golden Monkey or Malau and a male Zhen Zhu. It is remarkable for its forward protruding head and for its prominent chin.
4.) Kamfamalau
The unique-looking and intricately patterned Kamfamalau is a mix of a Golden Monkey and a female Kamfa with features of Malau. The primary feature of this good-looking aquatic animal is the pearling. Pearling usually crosses all the way across the kok another rarity in Flowerhorn breeds. This Flowerhorn breed represents the best characteristics of a Kamfa and a Malau.
5.) Tan King
The Tan King is not brightly colored but it does look unique for its peculiar patterns. It was named from its creator, Mr. Tan of VN. This peculiar Flowerhorn breed was created by crossing a Zhen Zhu with a Kamfa. This fish is characterized by pearls and flowerline like that of a king Kamfa.
6.) Golden Monkey
The lovely-looking Golden Monkey or Kamalau is a lovely-looking Flowerhorn breed from Malaysia. It was bred by Mr. Lam Seah and Lam Soon in Bercham, Ipoh. This type of Flowerhorn is a Louhan based fish and not a mixed type Zenzhu or Kamfa.

Malaysian people admired fishes with protruding head known as Karoi. These unique fish are also known as Warships. In Taiwan, these beautiful aquarium fish has slight protruding foreheads and long tails. In the Chinese society, Flowerhorns are widely accepted and believe to bring good luck in geomancy.
7.) Tornado Effect
In 1994, the importation of the Red Devil which is also known as Blood Parrot or Human Face from Taiwan to Malaysia marked the birth of Flowerhorns.
8.) Unique Track
The introduction of Flowerhorn in 1994 led to the crossbreeding of the Blood Parrot with the Human Face Red God of Fortune in 1995 which produced a new species called Five-Colors God of Fortune and became an instant hit.
9.) Coronation Link
In 1998, the importation of seven-color blue fiery mouth called Greenish Gold Tiger from Central America resulted to its crossbreeding with Jin Gang Blood Parrot from Taiwan. This crossbreeding was a success, leading to the first generation of Flowerhorns named Hua Luo Han which is then followed by further development of Flowerhorns
10.) Exotic Marvel

These were amazing aquarium fishes which had me thinking how could fishes have horns in the first place. These were promising candidates on my article "animals named for what they were not". Excellent post, kabayan.
