Motherboard Modern Form Factor

Modern Form factor consists of ATX, Micro ATX, Flex ATX, Mini ITX and NLX form factors. These types of form factors are used in all modern computers. The latest motherboards are based on this architecture. The ATX and the NLX form factors were invented by Intel. The micro ATX is a smaller variant of the ATX form factor.

 Advanced Technology Extended (ATX) Form Factor

Intel invented the ATX form factor in the year 1995. ATX and mini ATX form factors are most popular and has many of the best features of LPX and AT form factors. The ATX form factor is not compatible with the LPX or AT form factors. As a result, new system cases and power supplies were designed to match this form factor. These cases and power supplies have now become quite common and become popular now a days. The ATX form factor makes it easier to install and upgrade motherboards. This type of form factor supports maximum 7 slots. The main advantage is the single internal power supply connector.

 New Low Profile Extended (NLX) Form Factor

NLX form factor is a new addition to the Motherboard form factors. It was developed by Intel and is similar to the LPX form factor. The NLX form factor was designed keeping in mind easier assembly, reduced cost, space efficiency and flexibility. It supports a maximum of 2 slots. Micro ATX Form Factor Micro ATX motherboards are small motherboards that are 9.6" in length as well as width. Low-end PC users generally use this form factor. It has limited expandability and capacity. However, it is quite popular due to its small size and affordability. This type of form factor supports maximum 4 slots.

FLEX ATX Form Factor

FLEX ATX form factor provides the benefits of ATX and micro ATX form factors. It supports motherboards with 9 inches long and 7.5 inches wide. This type of form factor reduces the size of motherboard and is also available at lower costs. As Flex ATX supports backward compatibility and micro ATX motherboards, it can be installed on ATX and micro ATX motherboards; this type of form factor supports maximum 3 slots.

 Mini ITX Form Factor

Mini ITX was developed by VIA technologies. Mini ITX form factor is similar to ATX, micro ATX, Micro ATX, and BTX form factors. The size of the motherboard is 170 mm long and 170 mm wide. Mini ITX boards consume less power and are used in home theatre systems. This type of form factor supports maximum 1 slot.
