I was watching the Dr. Oz Show the other day and one of the segments was on kefir.  Dr. Oz stated that the probiotics in kefir helps the whole body, but it also helps elevate the mood in a person. That got my attention because believe that kefir saved my life. I’ll tell you more about that later.  

The probiotics from the kefir lives in our gut (our intestines); their function is to improve the absorption of minerals and vitamins and nutrients from the foods we eat. We all enjoy eating and we enjoy feeling well, and we don’t worry about what happens after we ingest the food. The gut has the difficult job of sucking all the nutrients – which includes the vitamins and minerals from that food – so that the usable nutrients can be drawn into the blood stream and carried to the cells of the body. The gut does a better job when it has help from probiotics. Everyone should have Kefir in their refrigerator. If you like the taste of yogurt, you will love the taste of kefir. There are many different cultures of the lacto-acidophilus organism.

Most everyone knows that kefir is good for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and it is good for the immune system, but many people don’t know that kefir is actually good for your general state of mood. Kefir has amino acids, which includes tryptophan, which improves the functioning of the nervous system.

Many of the things that go wrong with our bodies start in the gut. Kefir fixes the gut. It helps people with IBS; it has natural binding agents to stop the frequent diarrhea. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop after drinking a container of kefir, you should see your doctor because there could be something wrong with your thyroid.

Kefir naturally contains an antifungal agent which aids the body with digestion and also naturally lowers cholesterol in the body. This is very important for people who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. Kefir should be in every person’s refrigerator and consumed every day for health.

I know that kefir is good because there was a time that I suffered from chronic colitis. Nothing seemed to help me. I took drugs to stop it but sometimes they were just like taking candy. They rarely worked for long. My doctor suggested that I go to the grocery store and get a carton of kefir. I had no idea what it was, but I found it in the area where the buttermilk is.

You may have to call around to find kefir. Not every store carries is. Only a couple of stores that I know of in my area carry it. It’s worth a try to help you get on a healthy track. Many times we feel bad because of our state of nutrition. If we start eating better we start feeling better.
