K+12 Education in the Philippines
The Enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines has been officially started. It has been initiated by the Aquino administration where students will have to undergo a new system of education.
This program will require all incoming students to enroll into two more years of basic education. Thus, the K+12 System will basically include the Universal kindergarten, 6 years of elementary, 4 years of junior high school with an additional 2 years for senior high school.
Moreover, the program aims to uplift the quality of education in the Philippines in order for graduates to be easily employed. The program also aims to meet the standards required for professionals who would want to work abroad.
Most importantly, the system aims to fully enhance and develop the students in order for them to be well-prepared especially in emotional and cognitive aspects. Through this, graduates will be able to face the pressures of their future workplace.
However, not all are in favor of the K+12 Education. There are students complaining of the additional years and there are parents who are not in favor of the additional expenses. But indeed, it is an undeniable fact that additional years in the education system will really require more budgets not just from the government but from the parents as well.
Aside from this, students will need additional classrooms, school supplies and facilities. The program would need more qualified teachers as well.
I personally believe that the K+12 Education in the Philippines would uplift the quality of lifestyle of the Filipino people. But, this could not be done without being prepared. And since the program has already been implemented, what is more important now is for students to do their best and study despite of the lack of facilities. Nothing is impossible when we persist.
As for teachers, continue to teach with love and love what you teach despites of your own personal triumphs and economic crisis. Always remember that the future of the students depends upon you.
As for the parents who have been doing their best in pursuing their child’s education, remember that the program aims what’s best for your children. It will help your children to become globally competitive and if your children will succeed, you will also succeed.
There may be a lot of factors to consider for the K+12 Education to succeed. But as long as we open our minds to change and we will take it on a positive way, we will definitely attain our most-aspired educational standards which will play a great role in our country’s development and will therefore, uplift us from poverty.

i just want to ask this question, hope you will answer..what will happen to students who didn't undergo the senior high school in k to 12, students who graduated in the old curriculum in ched the not k to 12 curriculum, what will happen to them in college say they will study another course after graduating a course for example BSA then they will study again BSIT.what will happen to them if by that time they will enter another course their course (BSIT for ex.) will be 3 years only which means that only the major subjects will be study because the minor subjects are studied in the senior high school.what if they didn't undergo the k to 12 program, will they be admitted to college quickly or they will first take the senior high school subjets which are pre-requisite to college in philippines?

Hi kent..i would like to ask if you have an idea about the different types and guide used in curriculum development/..thanks you.
everyday people in the philippines is struggling for their survival especially in urban areas, as they woke up in the morning they dont know where to get their food because they dont have a job. one time i was able to talk with a foreigner from japan he\'s wondering how does the people in the philippines survive. i said our country is very blessed we believe in God, He will provide everything. our government \'s objective is good and it\'s for the better that is why i believe that our God will guide us in k+12 curriculum goal, \"BUDGET\" He wll provide that just believe anyway k+12 curriculum is proven effective all we need to do is to suuport it.
This piece sounds like it was writen by a cheerleader of the Aquino gov\'t. It lacks depth of analysis, and willingly or out of ignorance does not explore more of the CONs of +2 years in K-12. The writer can barely write in English, and it also reads like a homily written by a priest.
No matter how many training or how equip our teachers... kong ang number of students ng isang classrooms ay beyond sa kanilang kakayahan ihandle hindi parin mag improve ang ating quality of education from elementary up to high school... Dati around 35 students lang in one classroom ngayon may mga classroom na more that 60 students.... Aside from I highly recommend na ang elementary must whole day class talaga kasi dapat from 7 an to 4 pm dapat ang bata nasa loob ng paaralan at nag aaral para madecipline or masanay na maglaro.. in our time hangang high school whole day at around 35 to 40 students lang in one room... may mga maganda tayong products... Ngayon dahil lumubo ang population at kukunti lang ang classrooms and teachers na nadagdag sa ating gobyerno we cannot expect a good and talagang quality graduates.. I appeciate the k -12 program salamat
I appreciate the effort of the DEPED to improve our education in our Country..
I appreciate the effort of the government t improve our education in our country.. Now we have this K-12 program..... But my observation about this program still not effective... kahit gawin nilang k100 yan...
can someone tell me what year are affected by this?? i mean im 3rd yr HS and im wondering if my batch are also in k12?? or not
i agree to this. very beneficial. we can compete globally. 4 yrs=2 yrs lng d2.
I don't agree K+12.... most of the parents not agree on the additional 2years.
This is not the solution on our current problem on our EDUCATION here in Philippines, We just add another problem on our current problem now... We cannot compare to the other countries on their Education since their Teacher is fully equip and industrious. They have enough room, chair, table and books. The government supports the parents with below minimum wages to send their child to school but contrary in our country. The government always implementing new republic act but not doing their job, craft and corruption is the no. 1 here in our country. They need to solve this one first before implementing K+12. They jump to another problem since they don’t know how to solve the current problem. K+12 is another burden on the parents side, most of the child now not send to school since their parents cannot sustain the daily expenses and now they are implementing additional 2years. This is a POOLISHNESS IDEA....WAKE UP PRES. Noynoy... I really disappoint on you. I think that you can have a better solution but this is the WORST ever solution...
Imagine here in our Barangay 1teacher is equivalent to 60student in every room, 10students =1book, 1chair is =4 to 5 students and worst is, the teacher will report late and no proper discussion on the subject since 1 teacher cannot cater 60 students.... HOW THEY CAN PRODUCE QUALITY EDUCATION ON THIS CURRENT SYSTEM.... Even if they implement another RA K+30 example, this is not the solution, they need to solve this one first....
last year, they implented the UbD, whatever happened to that? was it effective? did it help improve the quality of education? where is the study, results and statistics? now, this k+12. have they prepared the teachers-were they given enough time and training? granted, it's the duty of school supervisors but what s the guarantee that they (the heads) are able to translate to their teachers the real essence of this new curriculum. it is true that there is a need to improve our curriculum and education system, but i hope they also considered the logistics - classrooms, school equipments, supplies, teachers' salary, and most especially the students and parents. based on what i am seeing and what i understand to what the deped is saying, that after senior high school, the students will become "employable" - that is, skilled workers. ok, that is good but how much does a skilled worker in the philippines get? or are they envisioning more filipinos to go abroad and work as skilled workers? is this the kind of global competition that this government is looking at? wow, i believe the govt should think again. look at singapore. they invested on their human resources. they focused on the improvement of their education system. their high school students can perform excellently in math and sciences. when they finish senior high, they can work - but unlike in the philippines, they get to be the bosses. those who pursue college degrees, even more. wherever they go around the world, they can compete - that is, not plain skilled workers. i am not saying that skilled work is not good. but, if you can get the highest rank with your education - why not aim for that?
Yeah I see this goood for education.Especially in the provinces., a teacher brings an egg and says " alright class what's this?" students says "egg Ma'am." teacher says "Ok bring each one of you tomorrow." Now she has plenty of eggs to sell in her sari-sari store.
Everyone must take their part, the government, the teachers, parents and sudents. Let us see it in a positive way.
i agree, k+12 education is good.. but many people inthe country are poor, how they will survive with this. It willcause too much pressure. hindi na nga nila mapag-aral ung mga anaknila paano pa kung madadagdagan pa ng ilang years ung basiceducation.
In US and in other countries, walang problem dahil unggovernment ung nagpapa-aral sa mga bata don, they are using thetax.. dito sa atin bayad tyo ng bayad ng tax pero ang nagbe-benefitlang ung mga nsa posisyon..
theres no need to change the curriculum, the main problem is between the teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. why not add specialized and professional teachers when it comes to actual combat. as i observed, many teachers are good in talking but very poor on practical.
president need to implement k+12 program in the Philippines so that students in elementary and secondary is more aware when they taking up bachelor degree in college, or maybe k+12 is very important especially to those students who can't afford to study in college.
trough this program it helps more Filipino. :)
ano ang ginagawa ni pres. marcos before that education is very effective? maraming tao are good in speaking and comprehending english even elementary? may high technology ba noon?.....he indeed equipped classroom with right facilities and supplies......kung ano and dialect gamitin sa isang lugar...gamitin yon but translate it to english the more effective...... kita ninyo mga older people sa mindanao..bisaya and books then we have also english translations, makilala talaga at magamit....now teachers say speak english language in a classroom paano ba yan..walang english sa kanilang bahay? sa curriculum natim maraming isinaksak di naman makuha lahat...hinay hinay lang pero we internalize what is being taught....sa japan addition numbers sa umaga...sa hapon addition pa rin...di ba, effective? para sa mga guro...feel bored to teach many kids in school especially the facilities are not equipped.....sa bulsa palagi makuha ang mga gamit para makaturo ng maganda...ganyan ang mga teachers ngayon..... hindi lang ninyo alam kasi daw magtiyaga according to our secretary . maraming bright na mga tao noon even they have not finished college!
ngaung school year 2012-2013 na [po b ito magsisimula? kse may anak po akong mag hihighschool ngaun> pls let me know> thanks po
I don't agree with the K12 program. Adding 2 more years doesn't give a guarantee that students will have better opportunity after completing 12 long years. People who have made this program haven't fully studied enough what it entails. QUALITY and I say again QUALITY education is what is needed not extra 2 years of same old system. Solve other problems first before adding more to what can not be resolved. People behind this program... "THINK" and not just try to make yourself look smart. Be practical and USE YOUR COMMON SENSE... that is if you still have any.
If you agree in this project, then its for your own good.

K-12 for betterment? Huh!!! sa mga my pera lng yan....instead of implementing that....bkit d n lng kayo mgdagdag ng mga rooms, books at teachers n mgtuturo ng maayos sa mga studyante? anong matututunan ng mga studyante if in 1 classroom there are 60-65 students???? and some of them having class under the trees???? and 1 book for 2 or 3 students??? bkit d kya yun ang patuunan nyo ng pansin ng gobyero.
The best solution actually to be added in the constitution for better education? That a prerequisite to run as a government official, is their children, niece, nephews, grandchildren, and great grand children must be enrolled in public schools (elementary, high school and college). That way, the public schools will improve. Let them WALK THE TALK!

4. The K-12 will open doors for more jobs for the youth, even without a college diploma.
DepEd says that a K-12 program will improve the chances for youth employment as it is aimed to improve technical-vocational skills through focusing on arts, aquaculture and agriculture, among others. The K-12, it further states, will ensure that students graduating at the age of 18 will have jobs, thus making them “employable” even without a college degree.
However, critics are quick to note that the Philippines, that has a predominantly young population, also has the highest overall unemployment rate in East Asia and the Pacific Region. According to World Bank study, the country also has the highest youth unemployment rate. Young Filipino workers are twice as likely to be unemployed than those in older age groups as they figure in the annual average of at least 300,000 new graduates that add up to the labor force.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported in 2008 that 50 percent of the unemployed 2.7 million nationwide were aged 15 to 24. Of these, 461,000 or 35 percent had college degrees while about 700,000 unemployed youth either finished high school or at least reached undergraduate levels.
Therefore, the persistent high unemployment rates, may not be necessarily linked with the present 10-year cycle but instead with the country’s existing economic system and the government’s job generation policies.
5. Filipino graduates will be automatically recognized as “professionals” abroad. In the present 10-year cycle, the DepEd argues, the quality of education is reflected in the “inadequate preparation of high school graduates for the world of work or entrepreneurship or higher education.”
What the K-12 program aims to achieve, therefore, is to reinforce cheap semi-skilled labor for the global market. With young workers, mostly semi-skilled and unskilled workers now making up an estimated 10.7 percent of the total Filipino labor migrant population, it comes as no surprise then that the government is now programming its youth to servicing needs of the global market.
Labor migration, however, has resulted in the brain drain of Filipino skilled workers and professionals. Ironically, while the DepEd and the government mouths a so-called “professionalization” of the young labor force in foreign markets, their significance to domestic development and nation-building is sadly being undervalued at the expense of providing cheap labor under the guise of providing employment.
While proponents and advocates hail the K-12 model as the “saving grace” of youth unemployment, critics argue that it will only aggravate the country’s dependence on labor export and the inflow of remittances that do not necessarily contribute to substantive and sustainable nation-building.
The registration of Internatiomal Conference Workshop on K to 12 Curricular Enhancement in Philippine Education is extended util now. You may now register and invite more educators to come. We are hoping to see you all. For more details please visit are FB (guro formation). Thanks very much
@alajor: I agree with you; the more years in school, the more money to spend, and the more financial problem to the parents...the objective of K+12 is to have a quality education. In my opinion, the cause of poor quality education are coming from the teacher themselves, you know why? most of the teachers at the end of school year they will recomend their pupils/students to the next level even though not fit, just to avoid a question from their superior if they will mark fail, and that is the cause of our poor quality education.
for me this is to much pressure for us,becuase many people here in the philipines is not rich, some can pay but some cannot.well it may help the standard of our education, but if this project has been approved many parents many students will get mad,and some will just STOP there schooling...for me just approve this project if we minimize the crisis of this country and many people will stop there education if this project will start sooner..this project should be approved in a time of 10 years...FOR ME I'M VOTING IT A NO TO K+12!!!THINK ABOUT MANY NOT ONLY YOURSELVES!!!
More expenses, more problems....Our government is preparing our children to work abroad because THEY CANNOT PROVIDE JOBS.. ALL THEY KNOW IS TO ASK FOR TAXES, CORRUPTION ---OUR DEBT IS NOT IN BILLION BUT TRILLIONS!!!!!!!
maam sa jan, pwede p po bang mag regster kc hnggang dec 15 lng yta from santiago city dami kc gusto mag atend

this program has been implemented in some part of our country.mt.Province if i'm not mistaken.they do topped the exams, nonetheless, the ratio of the teacher to student is 1:20. so mean to say, the focus of the mentor over the learners is quite achievable.the teacher is not exhausted unlike in the public school with a ratio of 1:70/more.(that's in the basic education). if the rudiments gained are weak, how could one possibly move to a higher level? They always say that teachers are flexible and that he can do this and do that and the like,..come on!way too Hippocratic!teachers are just humans.blame it not on the educator but on the insufficiency of the number of available resources.this program is good.definitely but the government, however, should put in mind first that we can never make it parallel to the other countries for we have more simple problems to deal with like BUDGET deficit!take a look at the rural areas, some don't even have a roof to stay for a conducive learning.unlike those countries whose officials are totally compassionate and devoted in their works..i mean to say those who are not corrupt!they really are well-off (in mind, heart and finance matter) thus providing their system a better opportunity for changes as such.i'm not saying we are not ready to adopt the program but my point basically is that we should resolve our problems ONE AT A TIME!scaffolding is of great matter to consider.

it is good for it is more thrifty but you can access a high quality education.and if poverty is the problem, the only solution is sacrifice."poverty is not ahindrance to success."
K+12 is very beneficial...bakit hindi po ito naisipang ipatupad noon?? mas marami pa po sanang makikinabang..at mas maunlad na sana ang ating bansa sa ngayon..... ;)
K + 12 is really beneficial,,for those who have problems with the incompetent teachers, the DepEd can produce competent and effective teachers but considering that, they will only teach the lessons that will be suited for you. don't expect that he/she will teach you in advance. therefore, we really need 2 more years to educate more the minds of the Filipinos to become globally competitive.

this is philosophically attractive yet impractical. because ang dami dami ng factors na dapat iconsider muna natin at ipraoritize bago ang additional expences na idudulot nito to the majority of poor parents and hard_up students. i beg to disagree and i think our country is not ready.
sana na e trns late 2 sa tagalog ! and this It is just an added problem and a very unrealistic plan. Yes, enhancing the quality of basic education in our country is urgent and critical for us to cope up with other countries, but we should put in mind that having the K+12 is not the only way to improve students’ performance in school. What is the use of having 12 years of basic education if ever there are no classrooms and books conducive for learning? The government should not waste their time in focusing on such implementation of the K+12 but rather focus on unsolved problems like fixing the current subjects instead of adding new ones. Let us think that quality should be over quantity. It doesn’t really matter how many years you have gone to school, but how you did during the years you were in it.
many people super poor and i think im not like tihs opinion K+12
i oppose this program because our country is realizing now crisis . .why we need to add another problem ??? theres so many problem in our country???

resolve first the problem with our present education system before implementing new programs specially those education in rural places. the problem with class rooms, additional teachers etc.

It is just an added problem and a very unrealistic plan.
If only those people who supports this k12 program undergone public school they would realize that the curriculum is not the main problem...sana ayusin muna ang ang mga existing na problema like incompetent and tamad na mga teachers, lack of classrooms, chairs, teachers and facilities and books..too many holidays aswell problema din...
Wasn't it supposed to be 3 years in Junior High and 3 more years for Senior High? Just like other countries?
this new way of educational system is taking way too far, many students can't deal with this system fast
I think this is going too fast. Why increase the number of years when a lot of schools in the poorer parts of the Philippines can't even handle the number of students they have now?
Quality over quantity. They should increase the quality of the school, the quality of the teachers etc. before they even think about implementing this.
That's just my opinion though
Yes, that's right Kent. At present, only the Philippines and Burma, among SEA nations have a 10-year basic education, and with the incoming ASEAN 2015,it's going to be difficult for Filipino graduates to compete with Singaporeans and Malaysians.
i just want to ask this question, hope you will answer..what will happen to students who didn't undergo the senior high school in k to 12, students who graduated in the old curriculum in ched the not k to 12 curriculum, what will happen to them in college say they will study another course after graduating a course for example BSA then they will study again BSIT.what will happen to them if by that time they will enter another course their course (BSIT for ex.) will be 3 years only which means that only the major subjects will be study because the minor subjects are studied in the senior high school.what if they didn't undergo the k to 12 program, will they be admitted to college quickly or they will first take the senior high school subjets which are pre-requisite to college in philippines?
