You probably experience waking up some mornings feeling groggy, bad tempered or exhausted. Waking up feeling that way is just wretched. Occasionally though you may open your eyes at the start of the day and feel energetic and full of positive thoughts and feelings. What a joy it is to wake up feeling so great. When this happens it’s likely that you wonder why you can’t start each day that way instead of it being hit and miss as to what kind of mood you’ll be in.
There are things you can do to make the chances of waking up in a positive state more feasible. What you do just before going to bed and how much sleep you get will determine how you feel upon waking.
Things to avoid before bedtime
Excessive alcohol consumption. - Alcohol may make you feel good initially, but it’s really a depressant. This means that later on after drinking you may feel down and blue.
Sugar laden food. - Just like alcohol sugar laden food can make you feel good initially as it provides a high and an energy boost. The last thing you want is extra energy when you need to relax and sleep. After the initial high sugar gives you a low is sure to follow.
Watching/reading/playing disturbing material. - Any mentally stimulating material, such as an excessively violent movie with no real storyline, is likely to disturb your subconscious. It is possible that the last thing which makes a deep impression on you before you go to sleep could affect your mood in the morning. Over stimulating material can also make your mind buzz with excitement and keep you awake.
Things to do before bedtime
Before you lay your head on your pillow and shut your eyes try to create the mood you want to wake up feeling. Make sure you totally relax and free your mind from worries. Imagine placing all your concerns in a hefty chest last thing at night which you won’t open until the next day when you are ready.
If you want entertainment before turning out the light listen to music you find beautiful, or watch a movie which inspires you and makes you feel happy and positive. You may read poetry or stories which make you feel good too, or a biography of someone you admire greatly and would like to emulate.
What to think about when your head hit’s the pillow
Just before you intend to go to sleep think about all the good things which have happened to you during the day. Don’t dwell on any problems you’ve encountered. If one pops up in your mind place it in your imaginary chest for storage before going back to thoughts of how lucky you are. If you are good at visualization you may then like to imagine seeing beautiful colors in your mind. If you are great at imagining noises think of soft, gentle music to help you drift off to sleep. Know that you are going to wake in the morning feeling fantastic and you are likely to do so.
