Families living in earthquake prone areas can be dangerous yet life threatening. Before an earthquake occurs, it is best that you and your family plan and practice what needs doing in an emergency. First of all, remember to do at least three jobs. These include:

  • Minimizing dangerous zones at home

  • Preparing your family by educating them what to do during an earthquake

  • Prepare your family’s life after the earthquake

Preparation

Preparation can help save you and your family’s lives once the earthquake strikes. Browse around the home and search for anything that might topple over during an earthquake. This could include television sets, DVDs, shelves, games, cabinets, drawers, tables and showcases. Any heavy items and objects at home should be kept below the head. This also includes little children who might easily get seriously injured if they do fall.

What to Do During an Earthquake

Earthquakes occur suddenly. There is no way you can see an earthquake coming unless you notice a tremor occurring first. If an earthquake occurs while you and your family are at home, don’t try going outside as this might be too dangerous. Find a safe place before an earthquake occurs and hide under it to secure yourself from any falling debris or furniture. If you’re lucky, turn off the gas and electricity before anything serious happens to them.

If you’re on the top floor, don’t go downstairs unless the earthquake is light. A severe earthquake could easily break the top floor down. Harboring on the ground floor when this happens could cost you your life. So it’s better that you stay at the top floor when a severe earthquake occurs.

After the Earthquake

With the rest of the family, take everyone outside before anything else collapses. Before an earthquake occurs, notify all the family members to meet up in the yard or porch after any earthquake occurs. Make sure you go there and find all the family members safe with no injuries or you will have to get them treated. After an earthquake, it’s time to get your earthquake supplies out. The earthquake supplies should include:

• First aid kit

• Sleeping bags

• Prepared food and drinks

• Thermal blankets

• Sturdy shoes

• Bottled water

• Toilet paper

• Flashlights and batteries

Summary

Overall, an earthquake will hit suddenly. You need to do all you can to get your family alive from the earthquake. The more severe the earthquake, the more likely your lives will be at stake. Remember to prepare before an earthquake begins, hide under tough objects for security during an earthquake and last of all, after an earthquake, take an earthquake emergency kit out for your family or neighbors.
