How to Have the Cleanest Toilet In the NeighborhoodFitness Equipment
When it comes to our toilets most of us just pour or spray some cleaner in there once or twice a week and give it a good brushing and leave it at that. Truth is we could all be a little better about keeping our toilet and things related to our toilets cleaner.
Here are some tips for keeping your toilet and related items tip top.
Hard Water and Rust Stains
If you have hard water or just purchased a house where the toilets have been sitting unused for some time the chances are pretty good that you have bad ring stains around your toilet. These can be difficult to get rid of. Here are a few things you can try.
Make a paste of Equal parts lemon juice and Borax. Using a clean sponge apply the paste directly to the stained area in the toilet. Let it set for a couple of hours and then give it a good scrubbing.
You can also try putting 3 or 4 denture cleaning tablets in the toilet bowl. Let them sit in the toilet for a few hours and then give it a good scrubbing.
Some people say that a can of coke poured in to the toilet bowl and allowed to sit for several hours will work. I tried this however, and it did not really do much for my toilets hard water stains.
You can also try a paste made with cream of tarter and hydrogen peroxide. Allow it to set for an hour and then give it a good scrub.
If none of these work and you are really desperate you can try using a fine sandpaper and try to sand off the rust or stain.
To keep the hard water stains from forming again after you finally have them removed drop a denture tablet in your toilet once a month and let it sit in there over night, give it a good scrubbing in the morning.
To keep from getting rings in your toilet while you are on vacation and to keep make doubly sure fruit flies don’t find a place to breed while you are away cover each of your toilets with plastic wrap, then put the seat down. Water tends to evaporate and if a toilet is not flushed for several days the water in the toilet water will evaporate leaving rings behind. The plastic wrap will help keep the toilet water level constant as it will help prevent evaporation from occurring.
Cleaning the Underside of the Bowl
Be sure to take some extra time to work under those edges of the toilet. If your toilet brush does not seem to be doing the job take an old toothbrush and give the area a good scrubbing once a month. There are little holes up there that send water down to rinse the bowl when you flush. You want those holes to stay clean and not get blocked.
Clean the tooth brush by swishing it around in a bleach and water mixture, then wash it off with soap and water. Wear rubber gloves when doing this.
Keep Your Toilet Brush Fresh and Clean
Also give your toilet brush that little swish in bleach and water once or twice a month. Then just like the toothbrush wash off the bleach with soap and water. Again be sure to wear rubber gloves when doing this.
Be sure to clean the bottom and back of your toilet when cleaning it. Although most people will never see the back of your toilet it can get really dirty back there and can cause odors. Also be sure to take a rag and wash the floor around the edges of the toilet. This will assure that there is no urine trapped between the floor and the toilet.
Keep it Cleaner
Teach young boys and big boys to wipe up any dribbles that might have gotten on the toilet after they have gone. This is something they should learn to do as a courtesy to others as well as helping to keep the toilet clean.
Keep flushable wipes nearby and occasionally just run them over the top of the toilet tank to keep dust from accumulating up there.
Wash any knick knacks or tissue holder’s etc. that you keep on top of the tank to keep them clean and bacteria free. Wipe them down every time you clean the toilet, but give them a good thorough cleaning one a month.
To clean your toilets with out chemicals on a regular basis simple pour 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of vinegar in to the bowl and give it a good scrub. The baking soda will help kill germs and the vinegar will kill odors. Don't worry the vinegar smell will go away in about a half hour.
