From the mold shattering engineering of William Friese-Greene to the competitive onslaught of the world’s leading television and camera manufacturers, 3D television has become among the fastest growing sectors of media development. From the 1890’s to the rapid growth of today three dimensional media is expanding exponentially in what will likely be the push to decide the future endeavors of 3D once and for all on the global scale. The research and development into 3DTV as well as the marketing ability to sway public opinion will determine the future of this media technology to come.
The historical roots of three dimensional television were humble and slow to progress. Saeed G looked over the past seven decades of technology to assist the creation of this piece and I thank him for his passion for television.
The two components of success and lack thereof in the hundred years or so of 3D technology are marketing and technological development. The sole elements of achievements in engineering alone are not enough to equate to success in mass production. Until recently 3D media was seen as a novelty or once in a while event more so than a mainstay of media consumption.
Creating three dimensional television and motion pictures has been a challenge to sway public opinion and develop convincing enough technology to back up the slogans and sauce of the campaign with substantial content. One of the key happenings that must be adopted in technology of 3DTVs is manufacturing how it works to a point of approval to the average consumer. This goal is made difficult by the competing mediums and methods of projecting and perceiving images that need to be advanced and regulated. Eventually one format will need to have dominance to become a universal standard for this new section of televisions.
To this point in history only limited successes in 3D have been accomplished and none of them had come in the home arena until recent years. While blockbuster films like the top grossing movie of all time, Avatar have shown the ability to make money, the majority of the public needs to be convinced in order to push millions of 3DTVs into homes around the world in the coming years of production and continued hardware design. There is also a drive from Hollywood to capitalize on the gargantuan success of Avatar by striking while the 3D iron is hot.
