Avocado is a pear-shaped tropical fruit with green or blackish skin and rich yellowish pulp enclosing a single large seed. This fruit is also known as Alligator Pear. Avocado was first cultivated around 8000 B. C. in Central and South America. The average avocado tree is of 65 feet in height and can produce about 1200 avocados annually. There are different types of avocado is available such as Fuerte, Hass, Gwen, Bacon etc. Major commercial producers of avocados are United States, Indonesia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.
Avocados are good sources of Vitamin K, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and copper.

Avocado is a gift for us because it has many health benefits. One of the major health benefits of avocado is that it is good for the heart.
The great thing about avocado is that it is rich in potassium. Potassium is very helpful in regulating blood pressure levels and reducing the risk of other circulatory disease like stroke. So, people who suffer from high blood pressure can have potassium rich food like avocado to reduce the blood pressure level.
Avocado is also very good for lowering the cholesterol levels. A monounsaturated fatty acid in avocado- oleic acid helps to lower the cholesterol. The heart healthy fat in avocado actually manages to lower the LDL levels and increase the good and heart-friendly HDL cholesterol levels. Therefore, avocado helps to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and stroke.
Folate is essential for healthy heart. It can reduce the risk of heart attack or heart diseases significantly. Avocado is a good source of folate. Many studies have shown has that higher percentage of folate in the diet lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Antioxidants help to fight free radicals and remove harmful toxins from the body. Free radicals and toxins can be dangerous heart and overall health. Antioxidants remove these harmful elements from the body and protect the heart and promotes overall good health. Avocado is very rich in antioxidants. Thus it is a good food for the heart.
Lastly, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6 promote the health of the heart. Low levels of Vitamin B 6 increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Lack of Vitamin C can cause atherosclerosis. Vitamin C is responsible for collagen synthesis and essential to keep the arteries free from the deposits and healthy. Avocado is a good source of both Vitamin B 6 and Vitamin C.
Word of Caution: Like banana, avocado also contains chitinases (digestive enzymes) which are related with latex-fruit allergy syndrome. Anyone who has latex allergy may very likely be allergic to avocados as well.
