The onion is scientifically known as Allium cepa, popular for its aromatic flavour. Onions come from the plant which has hollow leaves and closely related of garlic. Onions have been cultivated from the ancient times and highly regarded by the Egyptians. The word onion comes from the Latin word unio which means “single” – that reflects a single bulb producing plants. Onions come in different sizes and colours. Today onions are cultivated worldwide but the biggest producers of the onions are India, China, Australia, United States and Turkey. Onions have many health benefits and medicinal properties. • Onions are good for the heart and help to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Sulphur compounds in onions lower the blood cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels. Flavonoids in onions protect against cardiovascular disease. Also, onions work as anti-clotting agents which help to inhibit platelet-clumping.

• Onions are helpful to reduce blood sugar levels. Allyl propyl disulfide in onions is responsible for this effect. Allyl propyl disulfide- is an organic compound and main ingredient in onion and onion oil.

• The flavonoid quercetin and phenol (carbolic acid) reduce the chances of developing cancer. Studies have shown us consuming onions reduce the risk of cancer especially stomach cancer significantly.

• Onions are good for the skin as well. Onions stimulates the circulation of blood in the mucous membrane. Applying onion juices on the bruises, wounds etc. is a good way of treating skin problems.

• Onions provide important anti-inflammatory benefits. Antioxidants properties in onions and flavonoid antioxidant, quercetin- are very good in preventing the oxidation of fatty acids in the body. This is helpful for keeping the inflammation in check.
