Foods That Affect Menstruation
Did you know that what you eat, or do not eat, can affect not only the flow of your period, but your mood as well. Some foods can even trigger menstruation to start a few days ahead of schedule.
Note that every woman is different, you can keep track of what foods affect you by keeping a diary of what you eat and making a note of your menstruation cycle.
If you know what foods affect your cycle you can even use the foods to regulate when you have your period if you are not on hormonal birth control. You can then use eating certain foods to trigger your period to come one or two days early if you want to avoid having it at a less convenient time.
PMS is Premenstrual Syndrome, it is characterized by bloating, headaches, and moodiness. Some foods that make PMS worse are caffeine, sugar, salt, and fatty foods. Some foods that relieve PMS syndrome are fruits, vegetables, and more water.
Women on a poor diet may go for months without their period, this is very common for anorexics. Alcoholics also often have irregular cycles. Eating a lot of carbohydrates may also result in an irregular cycle.
Vegans may also see irregular periods.
Eating a lot of pineapple at the start of your period can result in a heavy flow. Although this sounds unpleasant, it can be beneficial to “flush” your system out thoroughly at least once a year by eating fresh pineapple the day before your period is expected to start.
For some women a sudden change in diet can trigger their period to begin a few days earlier than expected. Vegetarians who suddenly break their diet and eat meat may notice that it triggers their cycle.
Eating a lot of fresh pineapple, or papayas, may also cause your period to start a day or too early. Even drinking pineapple juice can trigger an early period.
If a person normally does not have a lot of salt and then suddenly indulges in a salty food, such as potato chips, they may find their period starts a bit earlier than expected.
For some people eating citrus fruit causes an early period.
If a woman is dieting, and particularly if she is exercising a lot, it may delay her period. Generally having a lower quality diet for a prolonged time may cause longer stretches of time between bleeding, but the health of the person is also compromised in doing so.
If you are trying to delay your periods, avoid the foods that cause them to come early.

It is generally not a good idea to try to alter your period too much. If you know you have an upcoming event, such as a wedding to go to, and you know your period is due on that date, you are better to try to encourage your period to come sooner, rather than to try to delay, or postpone, your period, as this is much easier.
