Fighting Depression with Honey
Depression is defined “as a state of low mood and aversion to activity”. While suffering from depression people tend to feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable or restless. The state of depression is further characterized by loss of appetite or overeating, problems of making of decision and concentrating, as well s remembering details. There are several natural foods known to fight depression. One of the most effective foods for fighting depression is honey. By definition, honey is a sweet and viscous fluid produced by honey bees from the nectar of flowers.
Honey counters the low feelings of depression because of natural sugars contained in it. These sugars provide instant energy and stimulation to the brain and body thus shaking off this aspect of depression. Traditionally, in the Unani system of medicine, honey and almonds are used in combination to make tonics for the well-being of the brain.
Honey has the quality to clear and calm frayed nerves. Honey taken along with herbal tea, coffee, warm milk or warm water provides instant relief to depression. In water, honey works as a stabilizer as it calms the high moods and lifts up the low moods. The ideal ratio for honey in water is 1:4. Alternatively, one can have one spoonful of honey in one cup of tea.
Honey can also play a role in helping to counter teenage depression caused by the surge of hormonal activity. To fight teenage depression, honey works wonders in combination with rosemary. Rosemary (rosemarinus officinalis) is also known as compass weed, compass plant, and polar plant. Its leaves are known for containing ingredients that have soothing anti-depressant characteristics.
Typically, ten to fifteen Rosemary leaves are boiled in a 100 milliliter's (3.5 ounces) of water. The mixture is then put through a strainer and one teaspoon of honey is added to the strained mixture. This concoction should stand for at least three hours before consumption. It is recommended to take this drink over the course of one month to see results.
Honey contains many nutrients that are healthy and can reduce the symptoms of depression. Many of the nutrients in honey are great for our immune system, which has a very positive effect on the healthy of our brains and thinking. Some of these brain boosting components of honey include kaempferol and quercetin.
Many times, depression can trigger sleep disorders like insomnia. Honey also has serotonin and tryptophan. Serotonin is a hormone that helps the body and mind to relax by inducing the brain to pass the signals of sleep. Tryptophan is an amino acid that forms serotonin in the brain and helps a person to relax and sleep.
Apple in combination with milk and honey also makes for a very effective mood lifter, and dipping strawberries in honey is also very relaxing and a great mood lifter.
