Lecithin is a yellow phospholipid essential for the metabolism of fats and found in egg yolk and in many plant and animal cells. Soy lecithin comes from soybean oil and made of three types phospholipids- phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphotidylinositol (PI). Soy lecithin is mostly used as natural emulsifier or stabilizer in various food products. Soy lecithin offers a multifunctional, flexible and versatile tool. Although, primarily it is used for its emulsifying properties but soy lecithin is also useful in pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

Functions and Benefits of Lecithin

Lecithin may be useful in treatment of certain diseases such as Tourette's syndrome (a neurological disorder), Alzheimer's disease, Bipolar disorder (manic depression), Atherosclerosis, Cardiovascular risk, Heart palpitations, Herpes, High Blood Sugar and Gallstones. Lecithin also good for liver health and promotes weight loss. Lecithin is very good to maintain and regulate normal cholesterol metabolism within the body. It is always good for the body to have high HDL level compared to LDL level. HDLs (high-density lipoproteins) are very rich in lecithin – especially the type of lecithin obtained from certain vegetable foods in the diet.

Lecithin is also key for the brain function. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) in lecithin breaks into choline and then acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter that is a derivative of choline), which is very important for the brain functions. Lecithin is very good for the mental health as well. Lecithin is important for supplying enough choline to the brain, which is used to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which drops with age. Low levels of acetylcholine can lead to Alzheimer's disease, Bipolar disorder and Tourette's syndrome.

Lecithin is helpful in many liver disorders. Lecithin helps to prevent fat build up and also eliminates toxins as it speeds up the flow of the fats and cholesterol through the liver. Lecithin is also very useful for weight loss. Lecithin can break down fats in the body – resulting in weight loss. High lecithin diet such as soy products, fish are good and helpful to lose weight. Lecithin supplements are also available and daily amount of supplemental lecithin is an average of 450mg but this can vary according to age, gender and health conditions.
