Cefuroxime axetil is an oral prodrug of the bactericidal cephalosporin antibiotic cefuroxime, which is defiant to most beta- lactamases and is lively next to a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
Upper respiratory tract infections for example, ear, nose and throat infections, such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Lower respiratory tract contagions for example, pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Genito-urinary tract contamination for example,
pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis. Skin and soft tissue infections for example, fumnculosis, pyoderma and impetigo.
Gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis, and cervicitis, enteric fevjr. ,
Cefuroxime is also available as She sodium salt (Supacef) for parenteral administration. This permits the use of sequential therapy with the same antibiotic, when a change trom parenteral tooral therapy is clinically indicated.
Where appropriate Ceftum is effective when used following initial parenteral Supacef (Cefuroxime sodium) in the treatment of pneumonia and acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
The usual course of therapy is seven days (range5-10days).
Ceftum (Cefuroxime axetil) should be taken after food for optimum absorption.
• Most infections 250 mg twice daily
• Urinary tract infections 125 mg twice daily
• Mild to moderate lower respiratory tract infections e.g. bronchitis 250 mg twice daily
• More severe lower respiratory tract infections, or if pneumonia is suspected 500 mg twice daily
• Pyelonephritis 250 mg twice daily
• Uncomplicated gonorrhoea single dose of 1 g Enteric fever 500 mg daily
Sequential therapy: Pneumonia:
1.5g Supacef tds or bd (iv or im) for 48-72 hours, followed by 500 mg bd Ceftum (cefuroxime axetil)oral therapy for 7-l0days. .
Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: 750mg Supacef tds or bd (iv or im) for 48-72 hrs, followed by 500 mg bd Ceftum (cefuroxime axetil) oral therapy for 5-10 days. - Interval of both parenteral and oral therapy is resoluted by the sternness of the disease and the medical status of the patient.
Most infections : 125mg (1 x 125 mg Ceftum tablet) twice daily to a maximum of 250 mg daily.
Enteric fever: 250 mg of Ceftum twice daily
Children aged two years or older with otitis media or where appropriate, with more severe infections: 250 mg (1 x 250 mg tablet or 2 x 125 mg Ceftum tablets) twice daily to a maximum of 500 mg daily.
Ceftum tablets should not be crushed and are therefore unsuitable for treatment of patients, such as younger children, who cannot swallow tablets, in children Ceftum oral suspension may be used.
There is no experience of using Ceftum in children under the age of 3 months.
Patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
