According to most people it’s about doing, getting, seeking, and achieving. A fleeting, elusive emotion, somewhere out there. Now let’s look another perspective. Matthieu Ricard, molecular biologist turned Buddhist monk, has managed to combine centuries of Buddhist wisdom with modern scientific research to conclude that, “Happiness is not a mere pleasurable feeling, a fleeting emotion, or a mood, but an optimal state of being. It is a way of interpreting the world. While it may be difficult to change the world, it is always possible to change the way we look at it.”

Let’s think about it. Remember the last time when you felt an immense sense of well-being, lightness in your body and spirit. The energy of that life force might have made you shine at work, smile at the ragging traffic and return home to envelop your family in a cosy blanket of love and caring. And suppose you could learn to cultivate that happiness skill for each day of your life!

• Try meditation: Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your breathing. Imagine that you are coming home to your body and enjoy the calming sensation. Do this for 5 minutes to start with and increase the time as you become more skilled.

• Believe In Acceptance And Forgiveness: Become mindful of toxic emotions like anger, hatred and jealousy that can erode our sense of well-being. And then gently let them go. Only a mind that has mastered the art of forgiveness can find room for happiness.

• Practice Mindfulness: Become aware of the tension you are carrying in your body and mind and relax. Just feel your tension melt away and let your mind return to a cool and clear state of being. Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. To be mindful is to be truly alive and connected with those around you and with what you are doing.

Happiness is a matter of choice, a way of being. It is a skill that lets us tap into our higher levels of consciousness and find insight, peace and inspiration.
