Honoring the moon is important in Wicca.  The moon is a feminine symbol which represents the Goddess in her three fold aspect.  The three representations of the Goddess are the maiden, mother, and crone which are associated with the waxing, full, and waning moon.  A moon that is waxing is one that starts as new and slowly grows to full.  This represents the young Goddess in her youth, or the maiden.  The full moon represents the Goddess in her matured state, as the mother.  The waning moon is one that is dying, or shrinking.  This represents the Goddess in her Crone state, as the wise elder.

Wiccans honor the moon as a way to honor the Goddess.  We generally honor the moon when it is full and when it is new.  The full moon ritual honors the moon when it is at the height of its power, while the new moon ritual honors the moon when it is not visible at all and it has symbolically died, making way for a new moon to be born.  Included below is one ritual for the full moon and one ritual for the new moon.

For these rituals you should gather a glass of wine or juice and place it on your altar.  Don't fill the glass too much as you will need to drink the wine or juice completely before the ritual is over.  If you can perform this ritual with the full moon or clear night sky in sight, you should attempt to do so.  If this is not practical, that's fine too, you will just hold the image of the full moon or the clear night sky in your mind's eye.

Full Moon:

When you have cast your circle and set up your altar, say "Goddess Artemis, Goddess of the moon in all her glory, I call upon you this evening.  On this night the moon shines bright.  Such a thing of beauty to bestow upon my sight.  I honor the moon in all its power, I show my respect for it in this witching hour.  As the moon grows and dies, it is a reflection of every single life.  Goddess Artemis I thank you for allowing me to appreciate this wonder as I carry in my heart the image of the maiden, crone, and mother."  Take your glass of wine or juice in your hand.  Say, "I offer in respect this wine (or juice# for you.  As I drink it may you so drink it.  As I taste it may you so taste it.  As I say, so shall it be."  Take a sip from your glass.  Meditate and reflect now on the symbol of the full moon #look up at it if you have it in plain view#.  Reflect on the mysterious beauty of the moon.  Reflect on life itself as it is reflected by the stages of the moon.  As you reflect, sip from your glass.  When you glass is empty, the ritual is over.  Release your circle.

New Moon:

When you have cast your circle and set up your altar, say "Goddess Artemis, Goddess of the moon in all her glory, I call upon you this evening.  On this night the sky is clear, the cycle of the moon is complete.  As I mourn the death of the moon, I rejoice in the fact that it will be born again.  I thank you, Goddess Artemis, for allowing me to have lived to see this cycle complete.  I honor the moon in all its power, as I pay respect in this witching hour.  As the moon grows and dies, it is a reflection of every single life. Goddess Artemis I thank you for allowing me to appreciate this wonder as I carry in my heart the image of the maiden, crone, and mother." Take your glass of wine or juice in your hand. Say, "I offer in respect this wine #or juice# for you. As I drink it may you so drink it. As I taste it may you so taste it. As I say, so shall it be." Take a sip from your glass. Meditate and reflect now on the symbolism of the new moon #look up at the empty night sky if you have it in plain view). Reflect on the mysterious beauty of the moon. Reflect on life itself as it is reflected by the stages of the moon. As you reflect, sip from your glass. When you glass is empty, the ritual is over.  Release your circle.
