Ungrounded Receptical And GFCI

I have two ungrounded recepticals in my house that i replaced with 2 GFCI they are both on the same circui. I put the hot on the brass screws and the neutral on the white or silver screws. I used a plug in tester that also has a GFCI test button. When i plug in the tester I it showed that I had an "open ground" Since there is no ground it made sence. But when I pressed the GFCI test button (on the tester) It came back with a reading that my hot and neutrals were reversed. I dont understand why. Thanks I appreciate the helpp

It sounds like you may have a small neutral current on the white wire of the GFCI receptacle. You should 1) contact the manufacturer to see if the reversed polarity is normal after testing; 2) Contact an electrician to determine if you have any grounding or bonding issues 3) read my other articles on the subject here: http://factoidz.com/problems-with-your-homes-neutral-wiring/ and http://factoidz.com/grounding-and-bonding-inspections-in-the-home/

Also when installing a GFCI receptacle without a ground you need to place the sticker on the coverplate indicating that there is no equipment ground.

Good luck!

Hi Daniel I like your post.

There are certainly a lot more details to take into consideration, but thanks for sharing this post.
