I am not bad in communication skills but not great too. i cannot impress anyone with my communication skills. I have been trying to improve same from past so many years by watching so many English serials , 100 of English movies , reading around 6 to 7 books but personally i don't see much difference in my communications. Is there any more efficient way to improve same or anything after practicing which i would feel the difference.
I commend you on wanting to improve your ability to communicate. From your description, I am assuming you are referring primarily to your abilities in oral communication. Watching movies and reading books may help, but only correct practice will improve your skills. Also, In watching movies and reading books, you may or may not be using the best examples of expression. You may even be practicing the wrong skills. I suggest you do one or more of the following:
1. Take a speech course at a local community college or through a local school district's adult education program.
2. Take a writing course or a course in English grammar from either of the same locations. Abilities in written language can aid in building oral communication skills.
3. See out the advise of the librarian to develop a list of the best books on speaking and writing skills and check them out to use them.
4. Join an organization like Toastmasters International so you must practice your oral communication skills.
5. Find a penpal to practice your written communication skills.
6. Develop your vocabulary. There are dozens of programs available, including the word quizzes in many local papers and periodicals such as Readers Digest.
Only by learning the appropriate skills and practicing them on a consistent basis will you really improve. Again, I admire your willingness to work on an area many find easier to ignore.
Hi Gaurav,
Very interesting point here. You also got many good and helpful replies. You have put a lot of effort into improving your communication skills. Such high motivation is a winning point. I am sure you will succeed in becoming an excellent communicator.
Though language is a primary medium of communication, good communication skills require more than language skills and good grammar. Look around you and you'll find too many native speakers (in any language) with solid grammar, who are lousy communicators.
This is such an interesting matter and I need time to sort out my thoughts. I'll write an article about this to explain my point.
Thanks for bringing up this point!
Cheers!

Hi Gaurav,
Learning good communication skills in a second language is obviously not easy. I have been working very hard to speak, write, and understand Spanish for about five years now. As the others who wrote to answer your question have suggested, the actual practice of using the language is really the only way. Even though it's frustrating, go out of your way to speak with people whose native language is the one you want to learn. Some people are kind and helpful; others are not. Don't worry about the unkind people! A very nice lady taught me to say "No tengo miedo" to myself before attempting to converse in Spanish. The English translation for that is "I am not afraid", What she was teaching me was that my skills in Spanish would not get better if I did not "take the risk" of using Spanish. Spending a lot of time in person with native English speakers is of utmost importance. Even though the words flow past at such a fast pace that understanding is nearly impossible, it will get better! I have found that for a long time, I could only pick out one word from sentences Spanish speakers said, and usually that one word had nothing to do with the meaning of the sentence. But as time has passed, I can now pick out five or six of the words from a sentence. So it does get better. Reading newspapers and sales brochures that are in the language you want to learn will be immensely helpful. Just be sure the irems are written by native speakers, not being translated. Also, a friend of mine who is bilingual (Spanish & English) studied with a pronunciation coach for some time. It was very helpful for him. Even so, after all the years he has been in the US and worked to speak correct English, he occasionally misuses or mispronounces a word. It embarrasses him so much that he fails to realize that his friends don't care. It's not his English skills we like, it is him and we appreciate how much work he has put into learning English.
Keep up the good work. Learning another language is a skill, not an inheritied talent and skills CAN be learned!
Everything that Sandy outlined is great, and I'd add one thing to it. Try reading any of the Dale Carnegie books on either self improvment or public speaking. Some of it is helpful without overloading the reader with information.
Good luck!

You know something, communication is an ability to express your thoughts and feelings fluently. Most of the people who feel they are bad communicators are the ones, who are not able to find words to express what they feel.
They know what they have to say, but still can't find enough words to put the message across.
The best way for you should be to talk often to improve your communication skills, I am talking about the oral communication.
You should also not make the whole issue of communication process complicated. Simplfy the whole thing, and I have this feeling that you are afraid to make mistakes. Moreover, you are over cautious about this whole issue. Be relaxed, it's important that you stay relaxed.
Thanks a lot for ur sharing.
It's really very helpful.
