Alternatives to Using Flash on Your Mac

Flash has always played bad with Macs. It works on them, but it hogs RAM and it taxes the CPU way more than it needs to. Abode have just realized the issue, so its going to take a while before its fixed. In the meantime its best to avoid flash altogether and find some alternatives. In this article I will list some ways you can avoid flash while not missing out on anything.

YouTube HTML5 Beta.

In case you don’t know, YouTube is flash. But now with HTML5 being developed YouTube has brought out a HTML5 optional beta. You can switch from flash to HTML5 by clicking the “HTML5 Beta” link on the YouTube homepage. It doesn’t matter if you have a YouTube account or not, though it only supports the following browsers: Google Chrome, Safari 4 (or above) and Internet Explorer 7 (or above). Amazingly it doesn’t support Firefox.

Use downloadable games instead of online flash games.

Instead of playing online flash games that tax your CPU and heat up your Mac, why not download some free games from the Apple store and play them? You can get application games or dashboard ones, and they’re easy on your CPU. Plus they are easier to access and you don’t need the internet to play them! And lets face it, the best games are offline. Online games are just very quick games (unless they’re MMORPGs like Runescape).

Download videos instead of watching them online.

Instead of watching videos online, download them. You can download YouTube videos so you can watch it over and over again, offline or online, from your Mac’s hard drive. For a detailed guide telling you how to download YouTube videos to your Mac watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbbfF-inupg

And its not just limited to YouTube either. You can buy tons of videos from the iTunes store as well as download videos from websites that supply them (though make sure they’re not illegal). There are many advantages to this, for example you don’t have to wait for the video to load, you can resize the video easier and the quality is usually much better than streaming video online.

Please note that this was written for Mac users as the whole flash issue is only with Mac OSX. Thanks for reading, and I hope you found these tips useful!
